BOOK REVIEW - Mahmood Mamdani’s “Saviors and Survivors”

Columbia University historian and anthropologist Mahmood Mamdani’s new book on Darfur has attracted significant media attention. You can find my review of the book on the Sudan expert Alex de Waal’s excellent blog, part of a larger discussion of Mamdani’s conclusions and arguments.

Steve will be appearing on the Richard Dixon radio show tomorrow (Wednesday) at 8am EST, nationally syndicated on the Genesis Communications Network, to discuss “US and world apathy toward Darfur.”

Postcard from Khartoum

We’ve published a short contribution to the Foreign Policy In Focus “Postcard” series, based on our February trip to Khartoum. We discuss what we saw at the al-Shifa ruins and describe the atmosphere in Khartoum, home to both millions of displaced Southerners and Darfuris and Gaddafi’s luxurious Burj al-Fateh hotel, where I paid $5 for a Coca-Cola.

Together with a group of writers, researchers, and academic specialists on Darfur, we have crafted an open letter to Barack Obama on how to approach the Darfur conflict. A pdf version may be downloaded here.

The advocacy group Africa Action has posted several of our photos from the al-Shifa pharmaceutical plant in Khartoum, bombed by the U.S. in 1998. The attack exacted an eventual death toll estimated in the tens of thousands, due to the resulting lack of medicines in the country.
